Positioned as it was, in front of the center of the Allied position, La Haie Sainte was always going to play a critical part in the outcome of the battle. As long as this bastion held out, then the French attacks were kept separated, and disjointed. Only when Marshal Ney brought over the fearsome 13th legere, was the farmhouse to fall to the French bayonets.
